Telemedicine FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can you tell if this option is right for your child?

Ask yourself these questions.  Is your child:

  • able to cooperate most of the time
  • able to understand and follow simple instructions
  • easily redirected back to task once distracted
  • able to demonstrate positive behavior, rather than avoidance when introduced to new items
  • receiving classroom instruction with typically developing children

If you answered “yes” to at least three of these questions, then Occupational Therapy telemedicine might be a good option for your family.

How does this work?

Occupational Therapy via telemedicine is very similar to services in the office.  We make an appointment and then have a video meeting in which I will watch your child complete a number of activities while providing verbal assistance as necessary.

First we will confirm the appointment and send an email link with:

  • Instructions to access the video conference
  • A list of materials needed during the session
  • Instructions for the activities your child will work on during the session
  • Any additional instructional materials necessary (this varies depending on the needs of your child)

After the session, we’ll send you an email asking you to confirm that the session was completed along with session feedback and  practice activities for your child’s follow up home program.

What equipment would I need?

This is an excellent question as the type of equipment here at the office is probably different from what you have at home.  You would need:

  • A computer, laptop, iPad or android tablet with a camera
  • A hop ball, physioball or exercise ball that is a comfortable fit for your child
  • A printer to print out activity guides (or a second mobile device to use during the session)
  • A few household and incidental items to use during the session (a personalized list will be sent prior to the session along with other session materials).
